La Roche and its region
Old massif of the primary era which was eroded throughout the millennia, the Ardenne has today the aspect of a plateau with wide horizons and a landscape hollowed-out by numerous valleys. One of the principal attractions of this country composed of forests and pastureland is the beauty of its landscapes sprinkled with tiny villages.
La Roche, situated in the province of Luxembourg, by far the greenest province of the country, is a lively little town which is dominated by the ruins of a medieval castle. Built in a loop of the Ourthe, one of the principal rivers draining the Ardennes massif, it is the ideal departure point to follow the numerous roads radiating into the neighbouring coutryside.
Bicycles, mountain bikes and kayaks are available, 120 km of footpaths are marked, a sporting complex with swimming pool and tennis courts. In winter cross-country skiing pistes (Samrée, Vecmont, Champlon) and downhill skiing (Baraque Fraiture) are near.
In the Middle-Ages, La Roche was the centre of a county which was a dependance of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, and stretched over a large territory. Excavations have been carried out in the castle in order to bring to light the rooms of the original castle, transformed at the end of the XVIIth century into a fortress by the architects of Louis XIV. Up until the 18th century, La Roche subsisted on the activities of tanneries and commerce assured by the passage of the Ourthe by the"Betchètes", a flat bottomed barque.
