Hôtel La Claire Fontaine BELGIQUE - La Roche en Ardenne - Province du Luxembourg

  Activities

:: For the walker

On leaving the hotel, walking paths are directly accessible; they will lead you to the villages of Beausaint or Cielle that dominate the valley. From there, you can proceed to La Roche or discover the small valleys of the Ourthe’s tributaries. According to your choice, these walks can last from one and a half to several hours.

Beausaint lies on the hillside left of the Ourthe: a path climbs the plateau’s slope where you get a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside. At the crossroads of cross of Beausaint one of the broadest panoramas of the Ardennes unfolds.

Cielle is situated on the opposing hillside, a road takes you there. After following this road for 1 km, you may also take a footpath which leads you through the woods of La Roche as far as the forest park of Deister. Laid out with play and seating areas, it unites on 15 hectares thirty different forest tree species. A game park and its cafeteria lie nearby. From the forest park, a path leads you to a viewpoint which offers a marvellous panorama on La Roche. At the foot of the slope is the chapel of Sainte-Marguerite, an oratory built in 1600 and partially cut in the rock.
From the hotel, a quiet road also leads you to La Roche following the valley (2km). If you want to leave for the whole day, a walk can lead you to Maboge, little village on the Ourthe upstream of La Roche.

:: For the cyclist

Maps for moutain bike tracks and cycle routes on quiet roads are also available.

As an example here are two of the proposed routes:

The first one goes in the direction of Hives by the small valley of the Hermeu, and soon leads to the discovery of the wide horizons of the plateau of Ortho before dropping down into the Ourthe valley, to the dam of Nisramont, and then climbing towards Filly and Nadrin, where one rejoins the road to La Roche. This tour by hill and valley crosses a constellation of little villages with rustic houses, passes nearby Gallo-Roman sites (Ortho and Nadrin), a Celtic oppidum (The cheslé in Bérismenil), Norman chapels (Ollomont and Herlinval) and the vertiginous promontory of Hérou, where you can see an immense panorama of wooded hilltops between which threads the silver band of the Ourthe (called the “Six-Ourthes). On returning to La Roche, one passes through the picturesque village of Maboge

From Marcourt, a second circuit leads you on the hills of the right bank of the Ourthe, up to Famenne, announced progressively by the light grey colour of buildings in limestone. You will enjoy the vast panoramas over the Famenne depression and the undulations of Condroz, visiting megalithic sites (Wéris), the remarquable Roman churches of the XIth century (Wéris, Tohogne, Waha), the old world charm (Middle-Ages) of Durbuy (smallest city in the world), the remarkable urban renovation of Marche, the Caves of Hotton (one of the most beautiful in Belgium). The road of Grimbiémont leads you to the Ardenne again through a beautiful deciduous forest. That is unless you return by the valley road in order to visit the mill of Bardonwez (Rendeux-Haut) and its arboretum of 62ha with not less than 2.000 different species.

:: For the motorist – tourist circuits

Spreading out from La Roche is an inexhaustible source of discoveries: you can easily reach many centres of interest by pretty roads with changing landscapes. The valleys of Salm and Amblève, Aisne, Lomme and Lesse, Sûre and Wiltz, are not far; even the Semois and the Meuse are less than an hour away. Within a radius 25 km as the crow flies let’s mention amongst others:

Saint-Hubert: European capital of hunting and nature: with its basilica (built between 1526 and 1564), the Saint-Gilles-au-Pré church (from 1034 and the choir from 1567), its abbey palace, the P-J Redoutable museum, the “Fourneau Saint-Michel”: museum of iron and old metallurgy, the museum of the history of the forest of the Ardennes and the Museum for rural life in Wallonia.
 Nassogne: its Saint Roman collegial (rebuilt in 1661; Roman choir, polychromic angels of +/- 1700 attributed to Del Cour).
Ambly: the Farm and brewery “Saint-Monon”, open every week end in high season.
Marche: a beautiful example of the re-evaluation of historical buildings, notably the church of Saint-Remacle (end XVth century), the Jadot House (XVIIth) and its museum of Famenne, the Quartier des Carmes, the lace museum, and the Norman church of St.Etienne at Waha.
Rochefort and its Caves of Han, known in the entire world; the “Jardin des plumes” (Feather’s Garden).
Durbuy, ancient little town, Tohogne (Roman church) and Wéris (with its church from 1050, its dolmens and the Museum of Megaliths, an appointment with prehistory)
Houffalize: Church Ste-Catherine, the Verheggen museum and Ségnia (section fauna and flora of the Ardennes, section excavations), Houtopia ; a little farther, you can find the Roman Church of Cherain (beginning XIth cent.).
Bastogne : well-known town for the heroic opposition of the Allies, which were encircled during the Von Rundstedt offensive (1944-45). This battle is commemorated with the star-shaped Mardasson ; the Church St-Pierre (end XVth century), its dungeon (XIIth) and its remarkable polychrome vaulting. You can also visit the Museum for History and Archeology, the Museum of Religious Art and Ardennes Traditions named “en Piconrue”.
